Binge Eating Disorder is a complex set of psychological and behavioral symptoms that may stem from emotional, neurochemical and genetic factors.
Binge eating occurs when a person eats a very large amount of food in a short period of time. Other symptoms can include eating until a person is uncomfortably full, feeling out of control while eating, and using food the primary means of coping with emotional distress. Binge eating behavior can create feelings of guilt and shame and may only occur when a person is alone.
If left untreated, binge eating behavior can lead to the development of additional psychological and medical problems, as well as other eating disorders.
Treatment can consist of individual or group psychotherapy sessions designed to help you understand and begin to change your compulsive eating behavior.
